Key Dates
The dates we keep an eye on for our clients, so nothing slips through.
Every tax year
File last year’s online return and pay the balance, plus your first payment on account. Miss it and a £100 penalty applies from 1 February.
The UK tax year closes. The new one starts on 6 April, and you can file the year just ended from that date.
Employers must give every employee on the payroll at 5 April their P60 for the year.
Report employee benefits and expenses (P11D and P11D(b)) to HMRC and give copies to staff.
The second Self Assessment instalment towards the current year’s tax bill is due.
Deadline to tell HMRC if you became self-employed or started earning untaxed income, such as rent, in the last tax year.
Last day for paper Self Assessment returns. Filing online gives you until 31 January.
File online by now to have tax under £3,000 collected through your PAYE tax code, if you’re eligible.
Limited companies: deadlines counted from your company’s year end
Filed at Companies House 9 months after your company’s year end. e.g. Year end 31 March → due 31 December
Paid to HMRC 9 months and 1 day after your year end. e.g. Year end 31 March → pay by 1 January
Filed with HMRC 12 months after your year end. e.g. Year end 31 March → due 31 March next year
Due 1 month and 7 days after each VAT quarter ends. e.g. Quarter ends 30 June → due 7 August
Dates follow current HMRC and Companies House rules. Your own deadlines depend on your company’s year end and VAT periods. We’ll confirm yours when you sign up.
Late Filing Penalties
Penalties start the day after a deadline and keep climbing. Here is how they build up.
HMRC · running total
Fixed penalty, even if no tax is owed
Plus £10 a day for up to 90 days
Plus £300 or 5% of the tax due, if higher
Another £300 or 5%, more in serious cases
Paying late adds interest and further 5% penalties on top.
Companies House · private company
Late by even one day
Doubled if late two years running
Each band replaces the last; the penalty is set by how late the accounts are.
HMRC · running total
£1,000 if late three times in a row
Another £200 (or £1,000)
HMRC estimates your bill and adds 10% of unpaid tax
A further 10% of unpaid tax
Paying Corporation Tax late also adds interest.
Already behind? Filing as soon as possible stops time-based penalties from growing further. We can catch up overdue returns and accounts quickly.
